Course Summary

A five-day Level 4 City & Guilds accredited qualification covering the full management cycle for confined space operations. Delegates will develop competence in hazard identification and risk assessment, confined space classification, resource and personnel management, legislative compliance, the development and auditing of safe systems of work, and the establishment of effective emergency arrangements.

 

This course is designed for delegates who are responsible for directing the activities of a rescue team during emergency and recovery operations in Confined Spaces and Hazardous Areas, and covers both water and non-water industry areas. This may include the role of rescue team leader, coordinator, entry controller or supervisor in the context of emergency operations. The content includes planning and preparing emergency operations, mobilising rescue teams, directing entry and exit during rescue activities, monitoring procedures and rescue team performance, liaising with emergency services, and securing and reporting sites following an incident.

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering, and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

Delegates must hold the City & Guilds Award in Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from Confined Spaces (6160-08) prior to attending this course.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for managers who are responsible for organising, planning and managing work in Confined Spaces and Hazardous Areas. It is suitable for those who may or may not directly supervise work activities on site, but who are accountable for legislative compliance, safe systems of work, and emergency arrangements across confined space operations.

The 6160-06 award equips managers with the knowledge, skills and competence to plan, manage and review all aspects of legislative and safety compliance for work in confined spaces. Aligned to National Occupational Standard EUSCS06 and endorsed by Energy and Utility Skills, it provides formal recognition of management-level competence across the full lifecycle of confined space operations, from initial planning and risk assessment through to post-activity audit and review.
